Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said today it is morally repugnant that a State-backed corporate landlord has attempted to flout legal rent controls.
The Minister for Housing needs to send a clear signal to corporate landlords that this kind of behaviour is morally repugnant, particularly at a time of chronic housing shortages and when many tenants are already pinned to their collars paying monthly rents.”
Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said today it is morally repugnant that a State-backed corporate landlord has attempted to flout legal rent controls.
Deputy Murphy was commenting on reports today that rents on Dublin apartments, funded by the State’s investment fund, are going up above the caps brought in to protect tenants.
Deputy Murphy said:
“Reports today that DAD Property Fund admitted it had breached legislation by issuing rent review notices less than a year into people’s tenancies are deeply concerning. It is also reported that the landlord of an apartment block in Tallaght is using an exemption in rent control legislation to impose 6 per cent rent hikes on tenants in an area where 4 per cent rent caps are in place.
“The Minister for Housing needs to send a clear signal to corporate landlords that this kind of behaviour is morally repugnant, particularly at a time of chronic housing shortages and when many tenants are already pinned to their collars paying monthly rents.
“It is absolutely galling that a corporate landlord which has received €8million in public money from the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund seems bent on exploiting loopholes in rent control laws to maximise profits.”
