“Enough is enough. Today’s ESRI Report is yet another stark warning that the rental sector is out of control and so many families who are forced to rely on the sector as their only housing option are increasingly at risk of losing their homes.

The Social Democrats by-election candidate for Dublin Mid-West, Anne-Marie McNally, has said the rental sector is out of control and urgent radical steps including a review of the Central Bank rules and an immediate rent freeze must be implemented.

McNally, who is also the party’s political director, said the rental sector in Ireland now comprises huge numbers of families of all demographics who are living with terrifying insecurity regarding their housing situation.

“Enough is enough. Today’s ESRI Report is yet another stark warning that the rental sector is out of control and so many families who are forced to rely on the sector as their only housing option are increasingly at risk of losing their homes.

“Minister Murphy has now conceded that the levels of rent increases are unsustainable, but there is no point in him saying that and doing nothing about it. There should be an immediate rent freeze put in place for a specified time period in order to prevent further numbers being priced out of their homes.”

“We cannot continue to ignore the negative impact that the Central Bank rules are having on the rental sector. The rules were implemented to stop people taking on mortgages they could not afford, but they have had the unintended consequence of forcing people to take on rents they can not afford, and increasingly, those rents are far higher than a mortgage would be.”
