Social Democrats Housing Spokesperson, Cian O’Callaghan TD, will tell the Dáil today that frontline workers deserve the same protections as other tenants.

Deputy O’Callaghan said:

“I’ve tabled an amendment to the Government’s Residential Tenancies and Valuation Bill 2020 that, if passed, will ensure that all tenants, including frontline workers, receive the same level of protection. It is utterly unacceptable that frontline workers, who have kept essential services running throughout the pandemic, will not receive any protection under this bill.

“Cleaners, care assistants, those working in meat plants and the workers who kept our supermarket shelves stacked and supplied must receive the same protections as tenants who are on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment and are unable to pay their rent. Many of these workers are in low-paid employment and continue to play an absolutely essential role at this critical time.

“I’m calling on the Minister to accept my amendment and to do the right thing for frontline and essential workers.”
