Co-leader of the Social Democrats Róisín Shortall TD has called for the full rigors of the law to be applied to anyone who knowingly engaged in the falsification of adoption records.

Responding to the shocking revelations today about false adoption records by the former St Patrick’s Guild Adoption Society, Deputy Shortall said:

“The cost of addressing this scandal should be met by the people and organisations who are responsible for it. But first, the Government must ensure that all necessary supports, including counselling services, are made available to the people affected by this. Everyone has the right to know who they are and where they came from. The people affected by this deserve the most proactive response possible.

“We have long known that a significant number of illegal adoptions occurred in this country, and the issue of false registration in Mother and Baby Homes is within the terms of reference of the Mother and Baby Home Commission.

“The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs must commit to full and early disclosure of any similar cases involving other adoption agencies. It is time we had the full truth of what happened. The full rigors of the law to be applied to anyone who knowingly engaged in the falsification of personal records.”
