The General Election campaign of the Social Democrats’ candidate for Dublin Central, councillor Gary Gannon, will be launched at a public event tomorrow night [Thursday 3 August].
Broadcaster, fashion designer, and health campaigner Brendan Courtney will MC the event, which kicks off at 7.30p.m. in the Skylon Hotel in Drumcondra.
The theme of Gary’s campaign is #We Are, and speakers will discuss their visions for Ireland in the fields of education, healthcare, the arts and integration.
Speakers include Social Democrats co-leader Róisín Shortall TD; Grace Dyas, an activist, director, writer and producer with Theatre Club collective; Grace Edge, Disability Officer at Maynooth University; Dr Laura Ann Lambert; and Ellie Kisyombe, a direct provision activist.
Councillor Gannon (30) is a project officer with TCD’s Trinity Access Programme and was elected in 2014 to represent the people of Dublin’s North Inner City at Dublin City Council.
Cllr Gannon said:
“I’m really pleased and proud to be contesting the next general election for the Social Democrats in Dublin Central. I strongly believe that voters are for looking for candidates who they can relate to and who represent the issues they feel strongly about.
“While our communities face challenges in housing, health and educational inequalities, we must all remember that with real vision and bold leadership change is possible. The Social Democrats want to build a fairer society where everyone is able to achieve their potential. I am committed to offering a vision for change to build a social democratic republic based on the values of fairness, equality, growth and sustainability.”
Deputy Shortall, whose own constituency of Dublin North-West borders Dublin Central, said:
“I strongly feel that Gary will be a great public representative for the Dublin Central constituency. As a councillor for the past few years, Gary has been a forceful advocate for a decent society where no one is left behind.
“He has shown natural leadership on important national issues like redress for the Magdalene laundries survivors, the need to revitalise inner city Dublin and the importance of good quality health services and education for all. Gary brings great energy and integrity to everything that he does, and I know that if elected to the Dáil he will champion investment in people, public services and a vibrant and sustainable economy.”
