Welcoming the publication of the Commission of Investigation report into Mother and Baby Homes, Jennifer Whitmore TD, Social Democrats spokesperson for Children, said:

“This is a difficult day and week for survivors and the Government must put their needs at the centre of everything they do. Their voices need to be listened to. In responding to the report, it is important that the State and religious orders accept their responsibility.

“In the past, individuals were often rendered powerless by the State, religious orders and churches who yielded huge power and influence. Primary responsibility for the culture and society that existed at the time – and for the decades of abuse that occurred – must lie with the State and the religious orders.

“It will take time to consider the report and the recommendations. We need to ensure that the voices of survivors and their families are heard above all others as we read and digest the report.”
