Cian O'Callaghan TD

The latest Daft.ie report shows that rents outside of cities are continuing to skyrocket, according to Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan.

Deputy O’Callaghan, who is the party’s housing spokesperson, said:

“Ireland’s record-breaking rents continued to rise by 6.8 per cent in 2023. People looking for a place to live now face average rents of €1,850 per month – that’s a €448 rise since this Government took office.

“What is clear from this report is that the housing crisis is not just a city crisis. Rents outside of Dublin rose by a staggering 10.6 per cent compared to 2.6 per cent in the capital.

“Rural renters are facing unsustainable rent increases without the protections afforded to those living in towns and cities.

“I’m calling on the Minister for Housing to immediately extend Rent Pressure Zones nationwide.

“It is inexcusable that the Government are creating a two-tiered system that turns its back on rural renters.

“All renters need to be protected.”
