Workers and young families, desperate to find a home, will find very little to be hopeful about in today’s figures

House price increases of more than 12pc in the past year have firmly bolted the door to home ownership for generation rent, according to Social Democrats Housing Spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan.

“House prices in Ireland are already among the highest in Europe. These latest figures from the CSO, confirming price increases of 12.4pc in the year to September, have firmly bolted the door to home ownership for generation rent.

“Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien keeps assuring us that affordability is a central feature of his housing plan. Where is the evidence of that? Under this government, runaway rents have continued to spiral while bidding wars, for the limited supply of housing that does exist, dominate the property market.

“Workers and young families, desperate to find a home, will find very little to be hopeful about in today’s figures – and even less in the government’s failed housing plan, which has done nothing to alleviate this crisis.”
