Social Democrats spokesperson for International Affairs, Cian O’Callaghan TD, has described the inauguration of Joe Biden as US President as the beginning of a new era of hope and renewal for the people of America.

Deputy O’Callaghan stated:

“Today represents a significant turning point for the people of America after four years of divisive politics and dangerous rhetoric. Joe Biden’s election was an important victory for the values of democracy, inclusion and equality.

“The inauguration of Joe Biden is not just a good day for American politics, it is a good day for politics internationally. It is expected that the incoming administration will focus on rebuilding relationships with the EU and other countries and will see the US rejoining global efforts to combat climate change.

“Irish people have always had a warm relationship with the people of the United States and it is comforting to once again have a President that understands the significance of the peace process on this island – and the need to protect it at all costs.

“The swearing in of Kamala Harris today as the first woman and the first Black, South Asian American Vice President is a historic milestone to be celebrated.”
