Cian O’Callaghan TD, Social Democrats spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, has called for Ireland to take a strong stand in defence of democratic values in Belarus.

Deputy O’Callaghan said:

“Ireland must take a strong stand in support of the people of Belarus and democratic values. Free and fair elections with robust independent international oversight must take place, opposition political activists should be released from detention immediately and all state violence and repression of demonstrations and political dissent must cease.

“The people of Belarus are taking a brave stand in the face of repression in demanding basic democratic values in their country – it’s important that the international community, European Union and Ireland strongly support these efforts.

“The emergency summit of EU leaders taking place this Wednesday is a key opportunity for European leaders to demonstrate leadership and show their support for democracy and human rights across Europe.”
