Two children became homeless every day in August

The increase in the number of families who became homeless in August is further evidence of the escalating housing crisis, according to Social Democrats Housing Spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan.

“The latest homelessness figures, published by the Department of Housing today, show the number of families living in emergency accommodation increased by 23 in August. The figures also show that two children became homeless every day that month – up by 60. This level of increase is deeply concerning.

“The increase in the number of families who became homeless is further evidence of the escalating housing crisis. We know that a scheme called Housing First – tenancies which include additional wraparound supports – is very successful at ending long-term homelessness. Currently, this scheme is only available for single people. This vital support must be extended to families who are currently in emergency accommodation.

“I am calling on the Minister for Housing to provide funding as a matter of urgency for Housing First for families in next month’s budget.”
