Fingal Social Democrats councillor Paul Mulville has called for the urgent publication of the Government’s long-delayed coastal strategy report.

Cllr Mulville said:

“Social Democrats party leader Holly Cairns has questioned Minister Darragh O’Brien about the long-delayed report from the National Coastal Change Management Strategy Steering Group.

“The Minister announced in September 2020 that his Department and the OPW were convening a National Coastal Change Management Strategy Steering Group, and that it would report within six months. The group was ‘tasked with considering the development of an integrated, whole of Government coastal change strategy’.

“The report has still not been published, and coastal communities such as ours in Portrane have been left facing the worry and fear of worsening coastal erosion and flooding due to rising sea levels and increased tidal surges, all a consequence of global warming.

“It is vital that this report is published without further delay so our community can engage with its findings and understand what actions the Government proposes to take to assist us and many other coastal communities nationwide.”
