Meet Joan

Joan Hopkins is the Social Democrats General Election candidate for Fingal East and Councillor for Howth-Malahide on Fingal County Council.

I was born and raised in North County Dublin. I love this place and wouldn’t live anywhere else. I spent twenty years working in finance and have a masters degree from UCC. I currently work as a Community Development Officer and a Fingal County Councillor.

I am a keen sea swimmer and a passionate ambassador for nature and the environment. I recently set up the EU’s first ever Seagrass Restoration project in partnership with the Marine Institute in Galway, which aims to help protect our villages from flood risk.

I got involved in politics because I believe we can, and must, do better to protect this beautiful place we call home and enhance the lives of all who live here.

I am very excited to be taking on this challenge. It is my intention to mount a vigorous grassroots campaign and be a strong and hard working representative for the people of Fingal East in Dáil Éireann.

Joan’s Priorities

  • Affordable Housing – Push for affordable housing for rent and purchase.
  • Healthcare and Education – Ensure adequate provision of healthcare, childcare, assessment and therapy supports, and schools.
  • Public Transport – Improve access to public transport, including safe cycling and walking options to the DART, and improved bus routes to UCD and DCU.
  • Utility Services – Call for solutions to continuous ESB and Uisce Éireann outages.
  • Community Safety – Enforce by-laws on public beaches and parks, and improve Garda presence.
  • Environmental Protection – Protect dune systems and prevent coastal erosion to guard against flood risks.
  • Sports and Recreation – Introduce additional facilities to promote health and well-being.
