Cian O'Callaghan TD

Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan has responded to figures published today showing that the number of people in homeless accommodation has risen by 213.

Deputy O’Callaghan, who is the party’s housing spokesperson, said:

“There are now 13,531 people living in homeless emergency accommodation – the highest ever recorded in the history of the State.

“Shockingly, 4,027 of these are children and 197 are pensioners.

“How long will this Government allow more and more people to go through the trauma of becoming homeless?

“Since they have taken office, homelessness has increased by 56 per cent while child homelessness has increased by 52 per cent.

“This is a damming record and an abject failure by this Government.

“I have been consistently calling for the reintroduction of the ban on no-fault evictions since it was lifted.

“This is not a radical measure – it is the norm in most European countries where people who pay their rent do not have to live in fear of homelessness.”
