Social Democrats Housing spokesperson and Dublin Bay North TD, Cian O’Callaghan, has expressed concern about the increase in the number of people becoming homeless and living in emergency accommodation.

Deputy O’Callaghan said:

“The latest figures released by the Department of Housing show that the number of people becoming homeless and living in emergency accommodation has risen again. During October, there were 6,095 adults and 2,642 children living in emergency accommodation for homeless people.

“The rise in homeless numbers is deeply concerning and shows that the Government is not doing enough. We need urgent and proactive action to end this homelessness crisis.

“There are also alarming reports that those sleeping rough are finding it increasingly difficult to access emergency accommodation and register as homeless. We cannot tolerate a situation where people are sleeping rough and being denied access to emergency accommodation.”
