Cian O'Callaghan TD

Today’s report by the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) provides further evidence that rent caps are being widely breached, according to Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan.

Deputy O’Callaghan, who is the party’s housing spokesperson, said:

“According to the Rental Sector Survey Report, median rent has increased nationally by €300 and is now €1,300 compared to the median rent of €1,000 in 2019 and 2020. This means that rents have risen by almost a third in the space of three years.

“This is further evidence that rent regulations for areas where increases are capped at 2 per cent are being flouted with impunity.

“Lack of enforcement is exposing renters to unsustainable increases. What hope do renters have of saving up a deposit for a place of their own when they need to sacrifice ever increasing amounts of their income just to keep a roof over their heads?

“It is clear that the Minister for Housing is presiding over a dysfunctional rent regulation system that is failing to protect tenants.

“He must take immediate action to ensure that the Residential Tenancies Board is fully resourced to stop these illegal rent increases.”
