The Social Democrats will this week select four new people to add to our growing slate of General Election candidates, all of whom were heavily involved in the campaign to Repeal the Eighth Amendment.

RTÉ’s exit poll last Friday showed that the Yes for repeal vote was highest amongst Soc Dems supporters, at 89.5 per cent.

The selection events and candidates are as follows:

Carly Bailey for Dublin South West

The selections kick off in Dublin South West tonight when Soc Dems party vice chair Carly Bailey will launch her General Election Campaign.

Carly, who lives in Firhouse, was co-convenor of Dublin South West Together for Yes group and was the national co-ordinator for the Soc Dems’ Repeal campaign. Carly has had first-hand experience of the recession, with her family losing their home to a vulture fund. She is currently a mature student at Trinity College Dublin, studying law and political science. Sarah Durcan for Dublin Bay South

Sarah Durcan will launch her candidacy for the next General Election tomorrow, Tuesday 29th May 2018. Sarah played a leading role in the #WakingTheFeminists campaign to achieve gender equality in Irish theatre. She is the Global Operations Manager of Science Gallery International. She has a background in theatre producing and financial management and worked for nine years as the Executive Producer for the award-winning Irish theatre company, The Corn Exchange.

Sinéad Gibney for Dún Laoghaire

Comedian Deb Bishop will be the MC for the campaign launch of Sinéad Gibney in Dún Laoghaire at 7p.m., Wednesday 30th May 2018. The party’s co-leader Catherine Murphy TD will speak at the event. Sinéad lives in Blackrock and runs a media production company. She served as the inaugural Director of the Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission from 2014 to 2016 and before that she built and led the Corporate Social Responsibility function for Google Ireland. Selection Convention for Dublin Fingal

Three members are putting themselves forward at a convention to select the Social Democrats candidate for the next Dáil elections in Dublin Fingal on Thursday May 31st at 7.30 pm. Further details to follow.

This week’s campaign launches will bring to 20 the total number of Soc Dems General Election candidates selected to date.

The Social Democrats will field candidates in some 30 constituencies at the next General Election, offering voters in the majority of Dáil constituencies an opportunity to vote for candidates working for a modern secular republic that prioritises the welfare of citizens in all our laws and services on the basis of equality and fairness.
