Social Democrats co-leaders Róisín Shortall TD and Catherine Murphy TD today paid warm tributes to women’s rights campaigner Sylvia Meehan who passed away today.

Deputies Shortall and Murphy said:

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Sylvia Meehan at this time. Throughout her life, Sylvia was an inspirational leader and role model for women’s rights and equality in the workplace and wider society.

“During her time as chair of the Women’s Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Sylvia was a fearless activist and champion for workers’ rights. As the first chief executive of the Employment Equality Agency, she continued to tackle inequalities facing women and girls in education and employment.

“She was also an effective campaigner for pension rights for women affected by the marriage bar. Her campaigning work has had a lasting impact on the lives of Irish women today.”
