Social Democrats Housing spokesperson and Dublin Bay North TD, Cian O’Callaghan, has tabled amendments to the Residential Tenancies Bill 2020 that would see the ban on evictions extended for six months.

Deputy O’Callaghan said:

“Today, I’m proposing an amendment to the Residential Tenancies Bill 2020 that would extend the ban on evictions for six months. Yo-yoing in and out of temporary and partial bans is not good enough at this stage.

“We have to take the threat posed by Covid-19 seriously. We know that evicting people into homelessness spreads infection – and it must stop. The ban on evictions should last, not just for six weeks as the Government are proposing, but for at least six months.

“We have to listen to people on the frontline. NGOs like Threshold and Simon have said that we need a six-month ban. That’s exactly what I’m proposing today, and I call on Government TDs to support my amendment.

“We need to move our rules in line with a European norm, where the grounds for evictions are much more limited.”
