The Social Democrats have this evening said they are strongly opposed to any visit by US President Donald Trump to Ireland, calling it a betrayal of Irish values.

The party’s co-leaders Róisín Shortall TD and Catherine Murphy TD were commenting following reports that President Trump will visit Ireland in June and will meet with the Taoiseach.

They said:

“President Trump is an aggressive nationalist and protectionist whose policies and approaches to international relations undermine international cooperation and threaten global security, trade and environmentalism.

“The Social Democrats will strongly oppose any proposed visit on the basis that we don’t believe Irish people are willing to entertain his narrow and divisive brand of politics. Any official hosting of President Trump in Ireland would be a betrayal of the values that Irish people hold dear.”
