Temporary extension of rent freeze and evictions ban is not enough – Cian O’Callaghan TD

Social Democrats Housing Spokesperson and TD for Dublin Bay North, Cian O’Callaghan, has warned that today’s announcement by the Government of an extension of the rent freeze and ban on evictions does not go far enough.

Deputy O’Callaghan said:

“The Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has today told the Dáil that while the ban on evictions and rent increases will not end on Monday, it will only be extended temporarily.

“These measures should be put in place until at least the end of the year. The ban on evictions has helped stem the flow of families into homelessness. NGOs have warned that once this ban is lifted, homelessness will start to rise again.”

He added: “The Government must immediately put in place resolutions to deal with rent arrears, which are growing. Otherwise, we are going to see a sudden spike in evictions once this temporary ban is lifted.

“Measures to protect renters and limit the grounds of eviction from their homes must be brought forward to reduce the numbers of families that are evicted from the private rented sector into homelessness.’
