Enterprise Minister should meet with Tara mine management in Sweden next week

The shock decision to temporarily lay off 650 workers at Tara Mines is a huge blow to the workers, their families, and the wider community in Meath, according to Social Democrats Enterprise Spokesperson Catherine Murphy.

“This decision came out of the blue last night and was therefore a huge shock. The effective closure of the mine is a devastating blow to workers, their families and the wider community in Meath.

“While this may be a temporary lay off, it cannot become a regular feature by Boliden management – announcing mass lay-offs with no warning and leaving staff in limbo.

“Boliden must present a coherent plan for moving forward and provide some indication of how long the mine is likely to be closed. Not only are 650 workers directly impacted by this, but so are many dependants and other businesses in the area not to mention suppliers to the mine.

“Enterprise Minister Simon Coveney was due to meet with management of the company in Sweden next week. I would urge the Minister to keep this meeting in his schedule so he can obtain information about the company’s short, and medium, term plans.

“In the interim, the Department of Social Protection must now rapidly put in place supports for the hundreds of workers who are affected by this shocking decision.”
