Social Democrats TD for Dublin Bay North, Cian O’Callaghan, has expressed concern at today’s news that 440 staff at a pharmaceutical company in Baldoyle are to lose their jobs.

Deputy O’Callaghan said:

“Staff at Viatris in Baldoyle Industrial Estate found out today that the plant is to be wound-down over a two-year period as part of global restructuring of the company.

“The timing of this announcement, which comes exactly two weeks before Christmas, could not be worse for the employees and this will be a worrying time for them and their families.

“With the economic impact of Covid-19 and Brexit likely to be felt in the jobs market for some time to come, the scale of these redundancies is deeply concerning. Viatris staff will need to be fully supported by the Government in securing new employment in the difficult months ahead.

“In the meantime, I hope the company makes good on its commitment to offer comprehensive redundancy packages and career counselling services to the affected workers. I urge them to engage with employees’ representatives at the earliest opportunity.”

“In addition, the IDA should work to source a replacement company and new jobs for this important site in the Baldoyle Industrial Estate.”
