Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon has expressed his solidarity with the thousands of workers who gathered on O’Connell Street today to denounce the scenes of violent disorder witnessed during last week’s city centre riots.
Deputy Gannon, who represents Dublin Central, said:
“Those who participated in today’s peaceful demonstration at the GPO encapsulate the true spirit of Dublin. They are the polar opposite of the vicious thugs and racists who weaponised a tragic event to wreak havoc in our capital city.
“The criminality we saw last Thursday was a direct attack on the lives and livelihoods of the very people who make Dublin what it is – the public transport workers, the emergency crews, the gardaí and the staff in our city’s popular shops, pubs and restaurants.
“Today, those same workers sent an unequivocal message to the individuals who only want to spread chaos, fear and hatred – it is time to reclaim the city that we know and love.
“The latest violent incident on Talbot Street last night will do little to assuage public fears about the safety of our streets. Those who work or live in Dublin deserve a properly resourced, overall policing strategy for the city – and not just a reliance on garda overtime to plug the gaps.”
