Meet Richard

I’m Richard Terry, the Social Democrats Local Election Candidate for Carrigaline.

I live in Passage West where I’m taking a year out from teaching to be a stay-at-home dad to my young daughter.

I have 13 years experience in secondary education. As a teacher, teaching Maths, History and Applied Maths; as a member of my school’s board of management; and as a committed trade unionist.

That broad experience, of science, of the humanities, of community, of activism, of parenthood, has left me with a particular set of skills, and perspectives on how local government can help improve the quality of life of people. I believe in finding sensible, evidence driven solutions to our community’s problems.

I chose to run because I want to ensure a fair quality of life for the people of Cork and to ensure that another generation of young Irish people is not lost to emigration because they cannot find that quality of life here.

Richard’s Priorities

  • Too many houses lie idle, vacant or derelict, I want to bring these back into use, to make them homes again.
  • Childcare is a source of great stress for parents, I want to improve access to affordable, reliable childcare.
  • Too much time is wasted sitting in traffic, I want to improve public transport and reduce congestion.
  • There is a lack of third spaces, places which are neither home nor work, where people can get out and socialise, I want to improve our shared public spaces.
  • Local government in Ireland is amongst the weakest in Europe. Capable, competent representatives are needed if we’re to make the case for changing that.
