I’m Saoirse Mackin, the Social Democrats Local Election Candidate for Cork City North West.
I live in Blackpool, currently work as a Community Engagement Officer and also study part-time in UCC. As a 25 year old student, I have felt the full weight of the housing crisis including the need to introduce social and actually affordable homes.
I recognise the need for a quality, single-tier healthcare system which we, as a nation, can be proud of. Sláintecare is the best way for us to ensure that the people of Ireland get the healthcare they deserve based on who needs it – not on the ability to pay.
I want to see proper investment in public transport and cycling infrastructure – this will ensure public transport is more reliable and affordable – and make cycling safer.
I’m involved in a number of local organisations including a cycling campaign, as well as being the Co-Founder of Trans+ Pride Cork. Outside of politics and activism, I am a fan of Rugby and GAA so I can often be found watching games in Musgrave Park and Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
I joined the Social Democrats because I believe we need Irish politics to become more honest and transparent. The potential, and desire, for change in Ireland is huge and I would be honoured to play a role in delivering this for you.
